A lively and colourful Cultural Awareness Day, with poems, songs, music, dances of many and varied origins, the opportunity to learn African drumming, have a henna tattoo, an Indian head massage or nail art, and dine from a superb international buffet lunch, took place at Wakefield College’s Thornes Park Campus recently.

The day-long event run by the College’s Student Union Office, was the first major event organised by the newly formed Student Executive Committee, who received funding from the College and Youth Opportunities to run the event. Student Union Liaison Officer, Sughra Ashraf said, “This was an excellent opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity we have here at Wakefield College. We had more than 400 people come through the doors and it was great to see people taking a keen interest in different cultures and ways of life.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped run the event and make it the overwhelming success it was. Also a big thanks to the students who helped organise the whole thing, they can be proud of what they have achieved considering it was their first major event. Well done to all.”
